According to WebMD experts the Ketogenic Diet is a specialty high-fat, low carbohydrate, and moderate protein diet that forces your body to burn fat instead of glucose, which it prefers. When you don't have the glucose available your body and brain really have no choice.
People that want to lose weight and build muscle quickly opt for this diet for short periods of time.
Note: If you have diabetes or aren't very familiar with healthy eating you should use this diet under the watchful eye of your healthcare provider.
The rule of thumb is keeping your carb intake below 50 grams per day, which is extremely low for most people. If you are extremely active you can push this up a touch and still force your body into ketosis.
Up to 70% of your calories will come from good fat, 25% from complete protein, and 5% from good carbs. Which is very opposite to the usual American diet, which is typically about 15% protein, 20% fat, and a whopping 65% carbohydrates, and usually the unhealthy refined ones.
You can eat fish, meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, non-starch veggies, nuts, a little fruit, and oils.
This diet is not dangerous as many people believe. The main caution is if you are diabetic and you force yourself into diabetic ketosis. If you follow this diet plan and you have no pre-existing conditions, you should have no issues. Beware that you may be a little grumpy and irritable for awhile because you are shocking your system that's used to surviving off carbs.
